Yup, I had index.tpl outside of template_dir. I put it there and now it works Rolling Eyes

This is the deal: i just installed smarty, and everything seems to work with one exeption. If I do:

require('Smarty.class.php');

$smarty = new Smarty;

$smarty->template_dir = '/

it does ...
