I think there is no need to do that. Java has velocity, webmacro, jstl. I don't know nothing about asp, but asp.net has a powerful template system itself. I think, that every programing language has a ... |

But there are no problems to do it yourself You can even extend Smarty with your own handler and check, if safe mode is enabled or not. |

But I think, that there are to many complex projects and such projects requires unique solutions. Few similar tables wouldn't be enough, I guess.
