In general it is needed to send a header because otherwise the browser could/would interpret it as html or plaintext.

after realizing that symfony proj *really* is not "hot-to-trot" for Smarty, *and* it uses (?) yaml (what, another format?) configs, i'm gonna take the plunge and focus on ZF -->
