I replaced just the modifier.escape.php witht he 2.6.9 version - and it works like a dream.

Do you mean Smarty 2.6.3 or Smarty 2.3? It seems you mean the latter (which is just dawning on me). Have you tried with a recent version of Smarty?

Yes I tried overlib.js v4.17 - but had no luck in getting the popup to work - so reverted back to v3.33 .

Oh - just retested the demo that came swith Smarty and it works fine with the original function.popup.php - but not the latest version.
