OK, I managed to hack a way of doing this in a not so elegant way
1... Update query to the database
2... Query the database
3... check the fields needed checking
4... update field if needed

Have you tried {$myobject.method} type construct?
I found I needed to {$smarty.server.REQUEST_URI} to get what I needed in a WYSIWYG.
