Hi!
I am using Smarty for a few months now and I love it!
I am now working on a commercial application that uses Smarty and I need to know if adding plugins will affect the LGPL license-ie if I am able to sell a software that uses Smarty and has a few custom plugins "home made".
I am also encoding the PHP part before distribution(not Smarty files though...)
Thank you very much for your answer.
Daniel

I don't claim to be a LGPL expert, but according to my understanding I can say the following:

I think your best bet is to keep Smarty 'intact' in its own bundled directory in your app and separate all of your custom code and plugins into different directories. (Smarty allows multiple plugin dirs if you declare them as an array, so this sort of configuration is very doable).

Of course, all of the standard LGPL rules apply to Smarty (basically, if you aren't encoding it and you retain its copyright notices and you allow/enable users to drop in their own versions of Smarty, you should be fine) and as for the rest of your project, that's pretty much up to you so long as you don't violate the LGPL in any way.

Note that if your custom plugins are based on a Smarty distributed plugin or otherwise uses code from an existing plugin or the Smarty library in anyway then the code for your custom plugin would be bound by the LGPL.

Thank you very much for your reply.
The plugins are really some functions and modifiers that do not rely on any other plugin/software to work, so I think it's safe.
I am also using another directory for the custom plugins and the end user will be able to upgrade Smarty without any problems(Smarty has his own folder , untouched)Smile

I should add one thing:

You can encode Smarty if you wish, but if you do so, you must also make available/include the actual Smarty sources used in your app. If you do not include the sources, you must make them available from the same place your app is available (ie. linking to the Smarty website is not acceptable--you have to provide the raw sources used by your app and you must make them available from the same place your app is available if not already included with your app).
