I, too, had the problem getting Smarty to work on Linux, with the same symptoms as other reported. Thanks to the info here, I found *two* problems. When fixed, everything worked:

1. Smarty doesn't appear to follow symbolic links, so when you set SMARTY_DIR, make sure to use the actual path.

2. The install doc says that when you set the $template_dir to use as trailing slash ("/"). That's a problem. Delete the trailing slash when setting $smarty->template_dir.

I haven't yet figured out whether the other three directories should or shouldn't be specified with the trailing "/". So far my directories are empty and things appear to be working. But I'm just getting started.
