What kind of problem did you run into then?

The install instructions state what to do: http://smarty.php.net/manual/en/installing.smarty.basic.php

Basically you have to make sure to provide the correct path to the "lib" directory when you include smarty!

in manual says install smarty in www/htdocs or such. but I don't use that directory at all. I use my own. that are on my D: disc in a different folders. so correct path to the lib would be what? I use phpdev for running apache and php with mysql.

There are many tips in the installation forum, such as the one I give in this thread. You should already understand how to configure your webserver and how PHP interacts with the server before attempting to use Smarty.
