There are several links in the forum to instructions on how to integrate Smarty with Zend Framework 2 but they all take the approach 1, 2, 3, you're done!

They all seem to have at least one folder or file that is not part of the skeleton framework or leave out one critical step. Sometimes they make a general statement, do this or that, but don't tell you explicitly what file/folder they are talking about.

Is there an actual step-by-step instruction specifically for the most recent skeleton framework?

I am new to both Zend Framework (any version) and Smarty and haven't found any instructions that were complete.

I did this same exercise for CodeIgniter and the process was very easy.
