It was Path errors...
I am using some Smarty based software, so Smarty is already installed. Let's just say I am exploring my limitations & capabilities with this system...not terribly familiar with Smarty, but I have been working with it for a couple years now, and done some major mods to this system, so not a total newb.
So, I borrowed from this thread to setup a simple text page:
http://www.smarty.net/forums/viewtopic.php?t=4500
I tried both of the suggestions...and I get nothing from Smarty. In particular, using the Smarty_Test.class method, I get no errors, just nothing on the screen.

I cleared all the logs and retried everything. No logs being generated, none that I can find in cPanel.
