I'm considering to move from WYSIWYG editor, which doesn't really produce consistent results, to a lightweight editor similar to Wiki one. May be even reuse one of the existing wiki editors.

But the problem is extending format with necessary enhancements.

Am I reading it right that I can use Smarty_Security class to limit one Smarty class instance to a subset of Smarty functionality, essentially using articles as templates and making precached versions of them ready to render on the page?

Another question is how to go about the wiki markup itself. It should probably be expanded before any other Smarty tags are executed. A template prefilter is the way to go?
