Is there a real need for unregisterFilter?

The current implementation of Smarty::registerFilter() actively forbid Closures. But judging from the code, it is only arranged that way to allow filters to be unregistered later.
But there's no way to SEE, which filters are registered, as far as I can tell. So, back to my original question - is the Smarty::unregisterFilter() necessary? If not, lots of code can be dumped and things can be made much simpler to read.
