At Computer Consulting Specialists, Inc. we evaluated several template systems, and decided to use Smarty.
As the chief architect of our projects, I have no regrets of our decision.
What did we gain from using Smarty?
1) Templates that provide clean separation from our PHP class modules. This allows our designers to do graphic layout and not tie up the PHP code.
2) Useful scripting built in to Smarty allowed us to provide enough support to handle logic and looping for presentation rules. This allowed us to keep presentation logic in our templates where it belongs. It also mean we don't need to use PHP to do basic looping and if/then logic.
3) Smarty is based on PHP - and easily uses all the PHP functions. There is also a very open framework that is easy to "hook" if you need extended functionality.
4) Lots of community support (look around here!), great docs, a very useful WIKI, and active open-source community.
5) great support for caching to improve web site performance. Several of our projects used heavy database support, but by using partial caching of the pages (called "cache groups") we could easily embed pre-parsed and pre-compiled HTML pages using the powerful and scalable caching solutions. I understand that version 2.6 is even better!
6) It's FREE!
I would suggest you look through the docs, and try a few examples. In less than a day you can explore the data handling and logic capabilities of Smarty. Trust that there is plenty of room for functional extensibility and performance tuning when you need it later.
