I'm running into the " Warning: Smarty error: problem writing temporary file

error..

I've got:

smarty 2.6.1 installed.

$smarty->use_sub_dirs = false;

$smarty->compile_dir pointing to a full absolute path with no trailing slash

the compile_dir chmod'ed to 777..

if i change apache's shell to /bin/bash, and su apache and try to creat the same dir/file smarty mentions above, i can do that.

is there anything else i should be looking for here? very frustrated.
