First let me say, yeah, there are already two other threads similiar questions, but neither provides the answer I'm looking for

I've been receiving errors similiar to this one from a number of various unrelated programs when I install them:

Warning: Smarty error: problem writing temporary file 'templates_c/%%940/%%940649611/3eb1b88275714'

And I've been able to detemine the problem stems from the "%%940" and "%%940649611" directories not exististing. "templates_c" exists and is writable. And if I manually create those directories, the installations will move on to the next set of missing directories, and install without issue once they've all been created.

My questions are: why is Smarty not creating those directories, what makes it think they ought to be there, and what's the best way to force it to create them?

I'd also like to know a little more about how Smarty determines what a template's ID (number after the %% ?) should be and where it stores that information.

Any assistance would be appreciated. Thanks.

messju had something to say on this:

http://www.phpinsider.com/smarty-forum/viewtopic.php?t=32&highlight=use_sub_dirs

and also:

http://smarty.php.net/manual/en/variable.use.sub.dirs.php

good luck!!

ps. I believe that the filenames are generated by a Smarty internal function. I think its called _get_auto_filename if you want to peek.

Thanks for the fast reply. Turning $use_sub_dirs off seems to fix it. I'd still be interested in knowing why it can't create them to begin with, though. PHP's safe_mode is not enabled, and other PHP programs don't have difficulties making directories.
