Smarty

Is there any way to use Smarty for templating without the templates_c folder? I tried setting cacheing to false but that didn't seem to work.

Alternatively is there a way to give users a "nice" error message telling them how to set the permissions if it doesn't have the permission to create/chmod the folder?

I tried writing a script which checked if templates_c exists, if not then it would use @mkdir to create it - and test whether it was succseful, but for some reason despite the @ I'm still getting the permission denied error.
