include_once("../smarty/libs/Smarty.class.php");
$smarty = new smarty();
$smarty->setTemplateDir('templates/');
$smarty->setCompileDir('templates/z_complied');
$smarty->setCacheDir('templates/z_cached');

$a = "something";
$smarty->assign('sy', $a);

--- and then in the html:

<div>
{$sy}
</div>

------
the output is "$sy" and not the "something". Why?

what is the rest of the code? do you have

$smarty->display('index.tpl');

And that is the source of the index.tpl file? is the output just $sy, or <div>{$sy}</div> literally, or something else? (view source of browser if looking at it in a browser)

I see a problem:

Code:
include_once("head.tpl");
include_once("page.tpl");

That just includes the file like a PHP script. You need to use $smarty->display().
