Is it possble to assign an individual array element after the array itself has been assigned to the template? Or do I need to replace the whole array?

For example, given:
Code:
$a = array('a' => 1, 'b' => 2);
$smarty->assign('a', $a);

Can I assign an additional element, perhaps something like:
Code:
$smarty->assign('a.c', 3);

or must I do:
Code:
$a['c'] = 3;
$smarty->assign('a', $a);

?
