Is there any way to add data to the smarty debug console out of inserts?

I tried assigning a variable and looking under "Assigned template variables" but no matter if I use a pointer to &$smarty or (yuck!) global $smarty it isn´t displayed.

But it *is* contained in the smarty-object if I dump it afterwards.

Or is the debug-console executed before the inserts?

We´re (still) using Smarty 2.6.26.

"Assigned" means variables assigned via Smarty::asign() call.
If you want more information, use PHP debugger.
