What would the most recommended installation path for Smarty?
I installed it under /usr/local/apache/lib/php and use the include command
to work with smarty. Is this ok, or are there some things to care about?

I think that would depend on your environment. If you have a place that you keep PHP libararies, then that might be where you put it. I keep mine under /usr/local/lib/php/smarty because /usr/local/lib/php is the home of my PEAR library.

There is no "best" here as it all depends on what you are doing and what you want to protect and/or make easier.

Are you worried about upgrade incompatabilities? Do you some legacy smarty sites that may not get upgraded when new versions of smarty are released? Or do you want to enforce a single version of smarty across several developers? There is no catch-all that I am aware of to handle the various scenarios that you may want to support.

I myself use a relatively conservative approach to libraries as I've been burned on incompatabilities between upgrades. I like to embed a local copy of smarty directly into my application directory and use the SMARTY_DIR to make sure that smarty can find its library files. This also makes it easier to package and distribute my applications as one can never be sure what will be available on a new server. Wink Fortunately, the smarty library is small enough (especially if you only bundle the absolute minimum files that your application requires) that embedding it is not a completely goofy thing to do.
