I created a search plugin for The FireFox browser (I'm sure it works the same for other browsers that support search plugins such as Netscape 6)

I submitted the plugin to the mycroft site, but for the impatient you can get it here:

http://www.phpinsider.com/temp/smarty-search.tar.gz

The archive contains two files:

smarty-docs.gif
smarty-docs.src

drop them into your firefox/searchplugins/ directory and restart the browser.

Enjoy!
Monte

Hmm, it works for me. Make sure you got the right plugin directory, and you restarted your browser.

Another Tip for Firefox users:

If there is a search box you find interesting (like the one on the Smarty page) you can you can right click in it and select "Add a keyword for this search..." in the context menu which will bring up a dialog. Enter a key name (say 'smarty') and then from the location bar you can search using the keyword "smarty"

eg: in the location bar type: smarty popup

ecco la!

Your Configuration May Vary.

Good thing we have an OS X guru here Smile

Since firefox comes in a "package", you must right-click firefox (or ctrl-click for the one-button purists) and select "show package contents"

From there, you go into the Contents/MacOS/searchplugins directory an place the plugin files in there.

Another option, from command line go to:

/Applications/Firefox.app/Contents/MacOS/searchplugins

that .app extension let's you go "inside" the package

I thought I would add a couple of tips for firefox users (really just an slight expansion of what I posted earlier....) These are handy if you are the sort that is used to typing everything into the address bar. These tips rely on the "keywords" features of firefox's bookmark system.

A) Standard Search Smarty Forums
i) create a bookmark for the following url:

http://www.phpinsider.com/smarty-forum/search.php?search_keywords=%s

The %s in the url will be replaced as will be shown in a moment.

ii) enter a keyword that you will type into the address bar to activate the bookmark. I used "sf" for "smarty forums".

iii) Save the bookmark and for convenience, put it into an folder to house various shortcuts of this sort. These bookmarks can not be used as normal bookmarks because of the otherwise illegal %s sequence.

iv) Okay, now in the address bar type something like:

sf foreach section

voila -- instant search of the forums!

B) Documentation Search at Smarty.php.net
i) create a bookmark for the following url:

http://smarty.php.net/%s

ii) enter a keyword that you will type into the address bar to activate the bookmark. I used "sd" for "smarty documentation".

iii) Save the bookmark as earlier...

iv) Finally, in the address bar type something like:

sd foreach

voila -- instant search of the documentation!
