My bad--I should have used a link that at least pointed to the appropriate man page. The relevant quote in the documentation is:
Quote: | The smarty object is available as $this within the PHP script that you include. |
That means that instead of having to create a new instance of smarty (in your example, $smarty) you have access to the current instance of smarty via the $this variable.
eg.
$this->assign('var',$var);
