Encodings support? Smarty works with UTF-8 out of the box.

Sorry, I wasn't clear. I'm setting $smarty->compile_id to the database schema name so that use_sub_dirs breaks out the subdirectories under templates_c as:

nychp/
sbhccf/
trms/

$smarty->template_dir and $smarty->compile_dir are set in the parent class. And use_sub_dirs is set to true to permit duplicate template names in different directories. That's not the issue. ...
