Smarty

hi all.

i've narrowed down php-friendly, frameworks-of-interest to two:

(1) ZendFramework
because it IS the ZnedFramework, and will become (eventually) defacto standard ...

(2) Symfony
because its an excellent framework, with phenomenal documentation ...

'tho i've read the recent posts on ZendFramework + Smarty, apart from the fact that i can't seem to get it to work/behave anyway, ZF is *way* too 'alpha' to spend much energy on @ this time.

symfony, on the other hand, has only recently started (afaict) acknowledging interest in smarty ... lot of zealots "over there" knee-jerk respond with the usual "Why would you want to use Smarty, or *any* templating system" B.S.

there was SOME work there on a plugin/swappable view class name sfSmartyView ... but discussion seemingly died off in ~ Feb of this year.

has anyone HERE used the sfSmartyView class, or rolled-your-own integration with symfony?

after realizing that symfony proj *really* is not "hot-to-trot" for Smarty, *and* it uses (?) yaml (what, another format?) configs, i'm gonna take the plunge and focus on ZF -->

I've tried many times to promote YAML here The basics for me are:

1) easy to read and write;
2) excellent for serializations and over-the-wire transfer;
3) turns out to be a superset of JSON;
4) better than the alternatives for many types of uses, especially configuration files

WRT, it is better than Smarty's config files for these reasons:
- supports arbitrary depth of arrays
- supports keys and/or indexed arrays at any depth

I even think it makes a nice intermediate format to replace assign(), thereby enabling a transaction level contract enforcement.

I don't use Symfony, however, and I have don't NEED to push YAML on anyone who doesn't want it. I think things like this ought be optional all-together.

So as it is not really a Smarty topic, I let it go
