Can't pass a variable...

Trying to pass a variable across my shopping cart templates and eventually enter it into a database, but I lose it on the last page.
I'm using the following at top of each template:

Code:
{assign var='ticket_desc' value="test" scope='global'}


It passes fine through 3 pages, but at the final confirmation page, it disappears.

Any ideas?
