|
|
Hi Folks,
From the docs, Basic Installation, Ch2 Installation, Quote: |
Here's how you create an instance of Smarty in your PHP scripts:
<?php
// NOTE: Smarty has a capital 'S'
require_once('Smarty.class.php');
$smarty = new Smarty();
?> |
I'm on a shared web space environment, where mistakes can interfere with other users so I'm somewhat chary of just going for it, should I put that in /home/myshare/smarty-3.1.35/libs/ ?
I've put the smarty directory in /home/ for now to try things out but it will have to go in the individual domains eventually as each host will not have access to that level.
Also, there is a book in Packt Publishing but it looks old. Is it still a viable learning resource for Smarty?
TIA

Does anybody have a view on this? I'm wondering if it would improve my progress in learning? |

I'd rather suggest a recent book on PHP+MySQL. |

OK. Thanks. I'll see what I can find. Unless you have a specific recommendation? |

I would say that book would improve your understanding of where Smarty sits in the development process, and elaborates on the possibilities given to the site designer (as opposed to the data modeller and business process data cruncher).
Published in 2006, it covers Smarty 2 (running on PHP4), but there are discussions on the hows and whys on the basic essentials, as well as advanced approaches, of what projects Smarty can solve - importantly, these discussions carry over to Smarty 3.
However, as this is a book using Smarty 2, be aware that there is the possibility that too much of the discussion may present the concepts using outdated Smarty tags and procedures.
But I think using Smarty 3 won't be all that confusing from initially reading about the concepts presented using Smarty 2.
(Buy a used copy of the book.) |

Yes, that was my fear but if the principles are just about the same I can refer to the Smarty 3 tags in the documentation to ensure I'm picking it all up something along the correct lines.
Also, Pakt Publishing are offering free access to it online. Which leaves the pocket money available to splash out on a much more recent PHP/MySQL or MariaDB (whichever, they haven't really split yet, code-wise) book in print on paper. |
