I am no lawyer but I can read the LGPL like anyone else
My takeaway is that, yes, it sure can be used in commercial apps -- as long as you adhere to the licence agreement. That's up to you to figure out. You will certainly have to maintain attributions to the copyright holders, but the link I posted will tell you what you need to know.
To whet your appetite, as long as you follow the licence, my understanding is that you can include Smarty in your apps without any licencing fees.
Monte can probably give you a more detailed explanation. |

by-the-way, if you are doing something commercial, it may be worthwhile to retain some *shudder* representation because you are right about being able to read those licences -- I kinda get it, but I doubt that I TRULY get it in a legal sense

well i am going to start out by offering them for free and once i have A LOT of time invested and a lot of features i may go comercial with them and at that time i will get a lawyer to read over smarty's LGPL and i will get my own license legally written
