Try this:
//### PHP FILE ###
$test = array();
$test[] = "HELLO WORLD";
$smarty->assign('var1',$test);
$smarty->assign('var2',$test);
$smarty->assign('var3',$test);
//#### Template File #####
{$var1} <br>
{$var2} <br>
{$var3} <br>
Only var1 is displayed. Bug ? |

your example prints:
Array <br>
Array <br>
Array <br>
which is fully correct, since $var1, $var2 and $var3 are arrays. |
