The permissions of the cache folder should be 0771.
But gets the page still get displayed?
Any errors in the PHP errorlog file? |

"771" what?… there's no such things as permissions in the void. there's always user and group attached to them.
Also, how do you know that he's not running PHP in CGI mode for example? Or suexec? What if 771 is actually undesirable? |

Check your php error log, see if any write errors exist. The user executing php needs write access to the cache dir. |
