As there seems to be no more noteworthy development on Smarty chances to be heard are not too big, but anyway: I'd plead for the default modifiers to be applied at run-time instead of compile-time.

I have a couple of documents using escape of convert (for applying the desired encoding) as default modifiers, and it would be really convenient to select the desired encoding or the type of escaping (which may in fact be different for different applications). In fact, the default modifiers are almost useless without this possibility which leads to writing code like
Code:
{$name|escape:$doctype|encode:$charset}
for each and every variable throughout the document. This is neither efficient nor readable :(
