I think that as a prelude to that, some serious profiling efforts need to be done. I *imagine* that having a few key functions available in a binary module can speed certain aspects of Smarty, much like the ADODB project is doing. It would be interesting if the code generation portions were kept separate (perhaps in the PHP code base) so that languages other than PHP could be targeted.

Currently, the code is going through a major refactoring in the CVS, so I think any attempts at this point are moot.
