Hi I'm having problems compressing some of the smarty files because their filenames are just too damn long. I'm creating a cms using smarty and to ship to clients i want to compress the cms directory including the smarty directories, however using many different compression programs i have yet to find one that does rename the files or miss of characters.

has anyone got any advice for a good program, pref free, that gives you control over the compression process so it doesn;t rename the files. failing that, would it not be simpler for smarty to shorten some it filenames?

the main three offending files are

core.assign_smarty_interface.php => core.assign_smarty_interface.ph
core.write_compiled_resource.php => core.write_compiled_resource.ph
core.process_compiled_include.php => core.process_compiled_include.p

It seems that you are using a setting which permits your filenames to have only 31 chars in length. You can try 7-zip maybe? It is freeware and has good compression, including self extracting files.

i'll try it thanks, however I have tested both mac and pc systems. both os's allow longer than 31 char filenames so i'm a little confused. I'll let you know how it goes

mac os 9 and lower does only support up to 31 characters long filenames. maybe you have turned some kind of "mac os classic compatibility" turned on.

no i don't think so i haven't even got classic installed! this is very annoying. i tried renaming some of the files and then altering the references within the classes however it then stopped working.

ah i upgraded the version of stuffit deluxe, turns out i was using a version that was classic compatible, thus negating the 31 chars, however still means the other apps i tried are a bit poo. Wink
