Has anyone tried using IonCube or the Zend Encoder to encode all of Smarty (except the templates) to get an extra speed boost? _________________ Smarty -> v2.6.11

The Zend encoder's main purpose is to "protect" your code from prying eyes. It does some optimization but it does not help with performance in a big way. I can't understand that product, really. (Yes, I know what people use it for and why, I just don't think that way.)
What you want is a PHP accelerator -- those cache compiled scripts and have a very large performance impact on Smarty. They rock! I use eAccelerator on both Linux and Windows and am quite pleased with it. Any accelerator will be a benefit for Smarty. |

Already running a PHP accelerator. I was just hoping to get a bit more of a speed boost out of encoding it if possible. _________________ Smarty -> v2.6.11

If you are running PHP as a module (not cgi) then speed effects of encoding (if any) will probably be negated by an accelerator. If it is the optimizations that you are after, I can say that eAccelerator includes an optimizer which I usually keep on but rarely see any difference from. I haven't used Zend's optimizer in awhile; while I suspect that it may be better than eAccelerator's I also suspect that the performance impact will at best be minor. |
