Has anyone tried using IonCube or the Zend Encoder to encode all of Smarty (except the templates) to get an extra speed boost?

The Zend encoder's main purpose is to "protect" your code from prying eyes. It does some optimization but it does not help with performance in a big way. I can't understand that product, really. (Yes, I know what people use it for and why, I just don't think that way.)

What you want is a PHP accelerator -- those cache compiled scripts and have a very large performance impact on Smarty. They rock! I use eAccelerator on both Linux and Windows and am quite pleased with it. Any accelerator will be a benefit for Smarty.

Already running a PHP accelerator. I was just hoping to get a bit more of a speed boost out of encoding it if possible. Smile

If you are running PHP as a module (not cgi) then speed effects of encoding (if any) will probably be negated by an accelerator. If it is the optimizations that you are after, I can say that eAccelerator includes an optimizer which I usually keep on but rarely see any difference from. I haven't used Zend's optimizer in awhile; while I suspect that it may be better than eAccelerator's I also suspect that the performance impact will at best be minor.
