Config files for multi-language support?

Hi!
I'm planing to create a multi-language support system.
All Pages are displayes using smarty.
Would you recommend to use Config Files to save the different translations of all the texts / words / ... ?

I'm thinking about a directory with the templates, a config file for each language and a variable that defines the current language.

do you think this is a good way to implement a multi-language system?
